Sustainable development demands broad-based participation and democratic processes. Citizen participation, accountable government, and fair and effective judicial systems help prevent the political destabilization that hinders long-term economic growth and development. CHP has developed a number of interventions and services that enhance and strengthen citizen participation. We have conducted training programs in democracy and civil society, election monitoring and campaign financing. Our work with non-governmental organizations has focused on broadening their effectiveness while increasing citizen involvement. Leadership training, advocacy techniques, strategic planning, fundraising and organizational development provide NGOs with the necessary framework and skills to assist their communities. Our work with NGOs has also helped link them with other NGOs nationally, regionally and internationally.

Managers and organizers of fledgling nongovernmental organizations have come to Chicago from Albania, Bosnia, Macedonia and Russia to participate in NGO development training programs designed and conducted by CHP They have used Chicago as a laboratory for learning how U.S. NGOs -- whether constituted to monitor elections, provide educational services to at-risk youth or press for social change -- carry out basic functions related to service, advocacy and sustainability.
